The rich ecological
diversity of the Guatemala
Petén region
offers our students the opportunity to connect with nature
in a variety of pleasurable ways. Many ecological wonders
are within easy reach of the school.
Around town, enjoy meandering around the streets
of San Andrés,
and it's fascinating vignettes of daily life, Explore
Lago Petén
Itzá in
a
"launcha" or go for a swim anytime.
Nearby is the lakeside town of
San José, an easy 20 minute lakeside walk from San Andrés. Flores is
only 20 a minute boat ride away in a "Launcha".
ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES
Conferences
Every tuesday, from 7pm a "Conferencia" is offered by members of the
community, about themes such as gum (chicle) extraction, Xate (a local palm exported
for flower arrangements
to the USA and Europe), Medicinal Plants, the work of midwives, stories about
the lake, forestry concessions and local traditions in San Andrés.
Films
On Wednesday evenings, a film is put on for students that can be selected by
students themselves.
Traditional Cuisine
On Wednesdays, all students have an opportunity to participate in preparing
local dishes like "bollos" and "Liquados" in order to learn about
food typically eaten within the community.

Bike
Visit the nearby late classic archeological site of
Motul. About 30 minutes by bike from San Andrés. This
unexcavated site has has a number of stelae
depicting rulers and glyphs.

Learn popular dances such as Salsa, Marimba and Punta Rock.

Commentario: The following activities have
a $US 7 added fee per person to help cover transport costs
and/or
admission fees.
ARCAS
Asociación de Rescate y Consevación
de Vida Silvestre (ARCAS), a wildlife rescue center. Animals
here
include macaws, green and yellow parrots, jaguars, howler
and spider monkeys, kinkajous and coatimundis that have been
rescued from smugglers andthe illegal pet trade. At the
center, the animals are rehabilitated for release back into
the wild.

Finca Don Zacarías
Don Zacarías Quixchán is a man from San Andrés who believes in the conservation
of the forests. He owns a self -sufficient organic multi-crop combination farm-forest.
He has great insight into the ways of the land with lots of experience in agriculture
and forest management. Pick your own fresh fruit to enjoy as you learn about
the this working farm.Photo

Cerro Cahui Biotope
Founded in 1980 in order
to protect the last dense forest around the lake near El
Remate, Today there currently, exists at least 15 separate
groups of monkeys. Picturesque views of Lago Petén
Itzá from
above, then go for a refreshing swim after the hike back down.
